Pondering – An Art-Rock Odyssey

Hi there fellow musos!

I’ve had a few people ask me when Pondering is coming out – and I’m pleased to announce that it is on track to be released before the end of 2023. (Yes yes, I know I said April 2021 initially, but I fell in love and got distracted – at least that’s my excuse). Indeed as the title says, “Pondering” is what I’ve been doing a lot more than actually composing and recording.

You’ll find that the musical ideas in the album are like a slow-cooked meal that’s been left in the pot for four years. I feel that my compositional craft has developed exponentially since I started recording, especially since I’ve now completed a major in composition within my Bachelor of Music. So the songs I wrote 3-4 years ago don’t reflect my composing chops today, but I’ll include them nevertheless, because it’s all part of my journey in this overcooked melting pot of dorky tunes.

Here’s a sneak-peak of what to expect:

  • Wakeup Juice: An instrumental electronic piece about a spicy passionfruit drink made with citric acid and chili powder. (Back to the Future III anyone?)
  • His Steadfast love: An ode to the enduring love and faith of God, contemplating His unwavering presence.
  • Stellar Canvas: An invitation to gaze at the night sky pondering love in the vastness of the cosmos, while wondering what happens to the saints, the “runners”, after death.
  • I’ll Look After You: A love song and promise to Tabitha to look after her through all storms, as she has done to me.
  • All That We Imagined: An instrumental piece about the joys of fulfilled expectations. I named this one after a lyric in “Magnification” by Yes.
  • Tainted: A more serious song. This one is about the tainted history of the church and its horrific actions and contributions to wars, colonisation, and exclusion of minority groups. It’s a plea for forgiveness, knowing that redemption is only by God’s grace. It is also a recognition that the heavy responsibility is now on us to be stewards of God’s church today.
  • Master Key: Don’t even ask me what this one is about. It’s 11 minutes of adventure, groove, and more pondering, but hopefully there’s something profound in it. A prog-rock banger to finish it all off!

So are you guys hyped or what?

P.S. “Adventure to Googong” is coming out next year. You won’t want to miss this one 😀
